Where do I go for Winter Hillwalking in Scotland?

....

In Scotland we are spoiled for choice for hillwalking. Did you know 60% of Scotland’s land mass is mountainous!

The Scottish Mountaineering Club [SMC] produce some fantastic publications on hillwalking and mountaineering in Scotland:

SMC PUBLICATIONS

These cover all of the Munros and Corbetts, from hillwalking guides to scrambling and summer and winter climbing. Perhaps one of their most famous and useful publications is “The Munros”, by Rab Anderson and Tom Prentice.

This definitive guidebook is detailed and comprehensive, with magnificent photography, and a narrative written with a clear passion and love for Scotland’s mountains. Well worth the investment!

You can see details of this wonderful book here: THE MUNROS

With shorter days and less daylight, where you go winter hillwalking may well depend on where you live or are starting from. A 5-hour drive home is the last thing you need after 7 hours of snowy mountain adventures!

The Mountain Weather Information Service MWIS divides Scotland’s mountains into 5 distinctive areas:

  • The North West highlands
  • The Highlands
  • Cairngorm National Park and Monadhliath
  • Southeastern Highlands
  • Southern Uplands

It’s worth considering which areas you can access most easily. The Glen Coe area in the Highlands tends to be one of the most popular. It has some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Europe and is only a 2 – 3-hour drive from the central belt of Scotland. [Edinburgh and Glasgow].
