What is Coasteering?

....

Coasteering is a journey into the tidal impact zone – that’s the area exposed only at low tide. It involves scrambling over rocks, swimming, jumping, climbing and low-level cliff jumping.

It’s an incredible opportunity to explore a world few people see when an entire sub aqua landscape becomes exposed for a few hours at low tide. Submerges islands appear, gullies, cliffs, kelp forests and sink holes are all exposed.

Low tide exposes a hidden world of rocky inlets, new islands, tidal pools, kelp beds and beautiful marine life. It’s all there to be explored and experienced, using specialist equipment and expert coasteering guides.

And then there’s the rise and fall of the ocean and the ever changing swell – this brings magic and atmosphere to a coasteering session.

Most coasteering companies in the UK are members of the National Coasteering Charter [NCC]. If you are thinking of coasteering, its worth checking if the company you are looking at is a member and therefor working to the standards set out by the NCC.

The NCC sets the standard for safe and responsible coasteering. Its aims are to:

Setting minimum operating standards to work to

– Setting minimum training standards to train Coasteering Guides to

– Upholding environmentally sustainable methods of Coasteering

– Be a voice to represent coasteering providers nationally to other bodies

– We provide opportunity for providers to share information to improve practice

– To share incidents, accidents and near misses to continuously improve coasteering safety

Coasteering is educational

A coasteering session involves exploring this unique environment, moving together as a team with briefings from the instructor as the journey progresses.

We feel coasteering should also be educational – where the instructor has a real knowledge of the wildlife, marine life, kelp and seaweed, and the rock formations that male up this epic landscape. most of planet Earth is water, and the more we understand about this beautiful environment the better!
