Is Paddle Boarding Safe?

Paddle boarding is an adventurous activity, that takes place in often wild locations and therefore comes with inherent risk. With correct knowledge, equipment and tuition these risks can be mitigated, and paddle boarding can be a completely safe adventure sport.

Firstly, if you’re totally new to paddle boarding or water sports – we’d recommend taking a lesson. The first lesson is the most important and will give the paddler the correct skills and knowledge to ensure they stay safe on the water. See more about our Paddle Boarding Lessons Here.

Before you head out on the water, you MUST follow a few simple steps to minimise risk and maximise safety.

  • Check wind forecast: Wind is the element with the biggest risk to paddle boarders. We act like sails to the board, and get blown whichever direction the wind chooses.
  • Check water condition: Tides if tidal, or potential swell or waves (which can happen on inland bodies of water too).
  • Check general weather forecast: Will you need sunscreen? Is there thunder/lightening due?
  • Tell someone you’re going on the water, where you’re planning on paddling and what time you plan on getting off… AND GIVE THEM A HEADS UP WHEN YOU ARE OFF.

Another way to minimise risk and maximise safety is to ensure your equipment is fit for purpose. This includes; wearing the correct clothing for the ambient temperature, water temperature and forecasted weather; a fully rated PFD for your body weight and; well-maintained paddle board, leash and paddle.

Taking a method of communication on the water is another important step to ensuring your safety on the water. If worst case scenario occurs, having a mobile phone or better yet a VHF Radio to call for help is potentially life-saving.
