What do I need for Winter Hillwalking in Scotland?

That’s a good question and a very broad one! Hillwalking in the mountains in Scotland is a magnificent experience. There’s a whole new world of adventure out there from late November well into April.

That’s 6 months of adventures you don’t want to miss out on.

So, in terms of what you need for winter hillwalking in Scotland here are the headlines:

  • You will need experience of winter hillwalking or have members of your group who are experienced in winter hillwalking.
  • You will need a decent level of fitness.
  • You will need the right kit – clothing and equipment – for winter hillwalking.
  • You will need a detailed understanding of the weather conditions.
  • You, or someone in your group should know how to navigate in poor conditions.
  • You will need a plan on which mountains to go to, and a route choice.

This list may seem daunting but don’t be put off. Discovering winter hillwalking is a journey that takes time and needs respect. It’s also a journey to be enjoyed with friends, old and new, over many winter seasons, and often a lifetime.
