Where do we sleep on an OV Nepal trek?

One of the most common questions we get asked before an expedition is about accommodation. It's a fair one — you're committing to two weeks in the Himalayas, and knowing what to expect at the end of each day matters. Here's an honest rundown of what you can look forward to.

Kathmandu hotel

Kathmandu and Pokhara

Before and after the trek itself, we stay in lovely hotels in both Kathmandu and Pokhara. You'll have your own room and en-suite bathroom — a chance to settle in, recover, and take in two of Nepal's most vibrant and fascinating cities before the real adventure begins.

On the trek: the teahouses

Once we hit the trail — on both our Annapurna and Everest region expeditions — we stay in teahouses. These are family-run guesthouses built along the trail, owned and operated by local Nepalese people who have been welcoming trekkers into their homes for generations.

They're simple, warm and exactly what you need after a long day of hiking.

What to expect

🛏️

Sleeping rooms

Rooms sleep two to four team members, with real beds, mattresses, pillows and blankets. Nothing fancy, but everything you need for a good night's sleep. One tip: don't forget your ear plugs.

Food

Breakfast and dinner are eaten together as a team in the shared restaurant space, usually centred around a warm stove. The menus are surprisingly varied, with both Nepali and international dishes — dal bhat, momos, pasta, pancakes. The teahouse kitchen has a way of producing exactly what you need, at exactly the right moment.

The views

More often than not, the views from your bedroom window or the restaurant will stop you mid-sentence. Some of the highest peaks in the world, right there. It never gets old.

Facilities

This is where things vary, and it's worth being honest about it. Lower down the trail, you may well have an en-suite shower. Higher up, you might be sharing one bathroom between the whole teahouse. Higher still, there may not be a shower at all. You adapt, and it really doesn't matter as much as you'd think.

Something shifts up there

The teahouses get simpler as you climb. But something shifts up there too. Life gets quieter. The evenings slow down and begin to revolve around card games, tea, good conversation and early nights. No signal, no distractions — just the team, the mountains and whatever the day has thrown at you.

Some of the best moments of any expedition don't happen on the trail. They happen here, at the teahouse table, long after dinner.

Everyone who has stayed in them says the same thing: these places are special. They stay with you long after the trek is over.
